What is it About Beeswax??

This is not the first post we’ve shared about our love affair with beeswax and it won’t be the last.

It’s a new love. And as the story goes, lust will fade and infatuation is fleeting. Not this time!!! When you know, you know, right??

When we started making container soy candles in 2015, beeswax candles were not even on the radar. Admittedly, we were also running a very busy floral shop and wedding business and candles were just an add-on to our lifestyle section at the store.

When we decided it was time to move on from that C-R-A-Z-Y industry, candles came into focus. The Flower Shop Candle (our OG) got a major makeover and we added ceramic holders with a few more styles in the soy.

Did You Know?

  • The oldest beeswax candle found intact was from the 6th/7th Century AD

  • It was used as an ancient form of dental tooth fillings

  • The size of wax glands on a worker bee depends on its age

  • Honeybees detect desirable flowers through ultraviolet patterns on flower petals, floral odours and sometimes electromagnetic fields

But then the moulded candles peeked our interest. And people started asking about tapers. We experimented with custom colours and they got our hearts racing. But the research and development phase (called R&D in the biz world) taught us that soy wax doesn’t really work in moulds. It’s too soft. Paraffin was a suggested alternative, but we really wanted to stick with the premium ingredients in our candles. It was a dilemma. We tried all different methods to make the soy work, but in the interest of sanity and not jumping off a cliff, we acquiesced to the fact that soy moulded candles were not going to fly.

But alas. We had fallen for the shapes and shades of moulded candles and so did our customers. And then beeswax walked through the door. Where had you been all our life?????

It’s the perfect wax for moulds because it dries hard and fast. It just slides right out, in perfect form. We were hooked.

There’s many reasons to love this wax: its natural aroma that is quite honestly addictive, its super long-lasting burn, its golden shade that is also perfect for making beautiful tinted candles, or the fact that you are supporting the Canadian bee population. It’s seriously a win for everyone; the bees, their keepers, the candle makers and you.

So that’s how our relationship with beeswax began. And it’s for ever.
